I went to GTAUK knowing very few people personally, and a few more from Twitter. The academy would offer me the chance to meet and connect with many more like minded professionals wanting to know more about using Google's tools in the classroom and beyond. Sometimes at events like this you might bump into someone that knows one of your colleagues, or you may have been the presenter at a conference they attended. Little did I know that I would meet someone that used to go to the same school as I did.
